The Risk Specialist is responsible for the facility’s risk management activities, which include but may not be limited to general knowledge of TGH’s insurance programs, managing claims against the facility, interfacing with defense counsel, administering the risk management program on a day-to-day basis, managing and analyzing risk management data, conducting risk management educational programs, complying with risk management related standards by regulatory and accrediting agencies with the objective of enhancing patient safety, promoting patient safety, quality care, and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the facility. This individual participates in formulating policy and/or organizational changes, but must seek advice and approval from higher authority. Under general supervision, maintains responsibility for claims management, determines the validity of a claim, setting of reasonable reserves, and coordinates the claim process, achieving resolution of the claim. This includes interacting with defense counsel, coordination of the discovery and deposition process, and attendance at depositions, mediations, and trials. Provides educational programs within TGH regarding risk management issues based upon feedback received from organizational leaders and SVP Risk Management & Director Risk Management. Works to determine areas of potential risk of exposure by tracking and trending incident reports, safety and security reports. Assists in collection of data, review of records and collection of documents in response to requests for production in lawsuits on behalf of TGH. Responsible for performing duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital.
BSN, Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management or Bachelor’s Degree related field required. Florida Licensure as Healthcare Risk Manager must obtain within one year of employment; CPHRM is preferred, but must be obtained within one year of employment; licensure as RN, and/or Paralegal is preferred but not required.
